CAPCHP Overview

Without these groups, I'd still be behind locked doors and my daughter would still be sitting watching TV instead of playing with kids. If it hadn't been for these sessions, if it hadn't been for the Resource Centre, a lot of us women would still be behind locked doors and closed curtains."  - CAPCHP parent
The Community Action for Prenatal and Child Health Program (CAPCHP) aims to strengthen public health capacity by mobilizing communities to promote the health and well-being of pregnant women and people, infants and young children (0-6 years) and their parents/caregivers by reducing barriers for equity-deserving families and addressing community-specific needs.

The time from pregnancy to early childhood (0-6) is crucial for setting the stage for lifelong health. Challenges and inequalities experienced during this period can significantly impact a child's health and well-being, both in childhood and later in life.

Community-based supports that focus on promoting healthy pregnancies, breastfeeding, nutrition, and physical activity, responsive care, and safe and secure environments in the early years can help to "level the playing field" for children facing health-equity barriers, with long-lasting benefits to health and well-being.

Community-based interventions are particularly effective as they can be tailored to local needs and priorities, engage the community, and take a holistic approach that can lead to lasting change.

Community-based groups and coalitions receive support to increase access to health and social supports for prenatal and families facing challenging circumstances such as:
  • poverty
  • teen pregnancy
  • social and geographic isolation
  • recent arrival to Canada
  • substance abuse
  • family violence
  • poor access to services
  • children experiencing developmental delays or social, emotional, and behavioural problems
